The brand standards are intended to inform the Virginia Commonwealth University and medical center communities on the appropriate usage of the VCU visual identity elements, nomenclature and editorial style guidelines.
Why use the VCU brand standards
The VCU seal and logotype, as well as the correct nomenclature, must appear on the front of any publication or printed piece, including brochures, newsletters, advertisements, posters and banners. The university’s seal and logotype also must be used on all organizational Web home and sublevel pages.
The integrity of the graphic elements must be maintained in publications and on websites. No changes may be made to their design, proportion, typeface or other attributes. Any deviation from these rules and standards must be submitted to the University Communications Review Committee for approval.
For examples of proper and improper uses of the brand mark, please read the brand standards guide.
Who should use them
Administrators, graphic designers, physicians, professors, students and volunteers should review this website carefully before creating any materials that promote the university using the VCU identity. In addition, any vendors or other external resources — including advertising agencies, graphic designers and printers — should reference this site to ensure proper identity usage and submit final designs for approval to the University Communications Review Committee.
Student organizations, such as the SGA, should follow the guidelines spelled out in the brand standards guide. Student groups are also expected to follow the same procedure for using the brand marks, and will need to have designs approved by the University Communications Review Committee.
If student organizations plan to sell or give away any merchandise featuring the VCU brand mark, they must receive approval from and follow the guidelines set forth by the Office of Trademarks and Licensing.
When you should use them
The VCU brand standards have been prepared to assist all those promoting the identity of their units and health care services to ensure a clear, contemporary and consistent design. These should be used as a resource when developing print publications, websites, stationery, signage and any other promotional materials.
